Red Tailed Hawk

You should always travel with your binoculars and camera in your vehicle. Most of us will have the best of intentions but rarely follow this simple rule. If you do manage to do it I guarantee that it will pay off once in a while. I was travelling down a back road and ran into this Red Tailed Hawk. I reached into the back seat and grabbed my camera and snapped a few shots before risking getting closer. This was the best shot I was able to capture.

Hi Mike. Stunning bird. Light breast, heavy belly band, wingtips reaching the end of the tail, etc. indicate that this is a light morph of the western Red-tailed Hawk. Compare with this bird (http://www.hawk-conservancy.org/images/mica.jpg), which is a light-morph western.

And you're right -- it always pays to be prepared!

Yup. The number of times I wished I packed a camera when driving! Nice capture.

I had to check out these comments because I noticed the same thing David did - this is a Red-tailed Hawk, not a Broad-winged Hawk. Great photos, though!

Thanks for the correction - I did finally fix it!
